LABOUR DELIVERS - IN THE KETTERING CONSTITUENCY
Since the 1st May 1997 we have had a Labour Government. Below is a summary of some of the main achievements in the Kettering
Constituency during the eight years that Phil Sawford served as the Member of Parliament.
PUBLIC SAFETY

Over 100 additional Police officers in Northamptonshire - 1,285 (Sept 2004). Up from 1181 in May
1997

23 Community Support Officers in the County and funding for a further 12 announced in November 2004.

The A6 Rothwell / Desborough bypass opened in August 2003. (£11.5 million)
-
Lighting installed on the A14 between Kettering and Rothwell (£1 million).

Speed cameras installed on the A43 in Geddington.

CCTV cameras installed in Rothwell, Desborough and Burton Latimer.

New pedestrian crossings in Northampton Road Kettering, Rothwell High Street, Station Road Desborough and 3 on the Ise Village as part of the 'Safe Routes to
School' initiative.

Crime is down 30% since 1997 and the chance of being a victim of crime is the lowest for 20 years.

New ‘Airwave’ combined data, radio and mobile phone system for Northants Police (£4 million capital & £1 million
revenue)
HEALTH
-
Kettering is in the Leicestershire, Northamptonshire and Rutland Strategic Health Authority. Across the
area there are 963 more nurses, 393 more Doctors and 176 more Consultants than there were in 1997.

New CAT scanner at Kettering General Hospital (£500,000).

New MRI scanner at Kettering General Hospital (£1 million).
-
New skin care unit opened at KGH February 2003 (£1 million).

New Opthalmology unit at KGH £300,000.
-
Extension to the intensive care unit at KGH (£900,000).
-
New Orthopaedic theatre at KGH (£650,000).
-
New Endoscopy suite at KGH (£400,000).

Modernisation of A & E at Northampton Hospital (£500,000)

New 'Rapid Access' Chest Pain Clinic opened at KGH 2001

Work has started on a £24 million modernisation plan at Kettering General Hospital with the construction of a £14.5 million short stay treatment
centre

A new ‘Robotic Analyser Machine’ has been installed in the pathology lab (£1 million)

A second CAT scanner is due to be installed and operational by mid March 2005 (£500,000)

Extension to the education and training centre will be completed by the end of 2005 (£4 million)
EDUCATION
-
Rothwell Junior School - 8 new classrooms (£380,000) opened in March 2000.

More Teachers - 470 more in Northamptonshire than in 1998 (total 5,720).

St Thomas More RC Primary - new heating system and new classrooms.

Hawthorn Road School - 3 new classrooms (£235,000).

Montsaye Community College - 8 new classrooms (over £1 million).

Avondale Junior School - new classrooms (£75,900).

New school (Hall Meadow) opened in Kettering.

Park Infant School- new classrooms (£90,000).

Brambleside Primary School - 2 new classrooms (£180,000).

Grange Primary - 2 new classrooms (£126,000) opened September 2000

Rothwell Victoria Infants School - New Classrooms (£250,000). At the opening 25 balloons were released to mark the 25 years that mobile classrooms had been
on the site.

Latimer Community Arts College (£1.7 million Arts centre).

Montagu School - £1.5 million for new sports hall.

New sport and community facilities at Grange School (£980,000).

New classrooms opened September 2003 to replace 50 year old prefabricated classrooms at Guilsborough Primary School (£400,000).

New science and maths block at Montsaye (Rothwell) (£900,000)

Two new classrooms opened at Maidwell Primary School June 2000. One of the 'Mobile' classrooms was actually a discarded builders cabin from the A14
construction site.

EMPLOYMENT
1. In Kettering unemployment is down 36 percent since
1997.
2. In Kettering - 420 young people have been helped in to work through
the New Deal for young people · 150 through the new deal for the Over 25’s. ·
150 through the new deal for the Over 50’s. · 460 through the new deal for lone parents.
3. The number of people in the Kettering Constituency out of work for
over one year has been cut by 70% since 1997.
HELP FOR FAMILIES

Thousands of families benefit through the new 'Child Tax Credit', the biggest ever increase in 'Child Benefit'.

New Child Trust Fund launched in the last budget.
-
In Northamptonshire 13,000 free nursery education places for three and four year olds were taken up in 2003.
A BETTER DEAL FOR PENSIONERS
-
Over 20,240 people over 60 years of age in the Kettering Constituency receive the £200 winter fuel allowance (a further 4660 pensioners over 80 years of age,
will soon benefit by an additional £100).
-
6,900 people over 75 in the Kettering Constituency get a free TV Licence.
-
VAT on fuel reduced from 8% to 5%.

Free eye test restored.

4225 people are receiving Pensions Credit payments in the Kettering Constituency and the average sum is £35.82
INVESTING IN COMMUNITIES 1. Sure start has received £768,752 in 2005/06. In addition to this £938,000 of a capital grant will be invested in a new building which will provide a family centre, 26 full
day bcare places and accommodation for up to 20 staff.2.
Redevelopment of the ‘Lawrences’ site in Desborough £1.7 million government funding.3. £1.5 million government funding for recycling household waste
